It was a reading of the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe translated autobiography of the most significant Italian goldsmith and sculptor of the fading renaissance Benvenuto Cellinis, that was the start point for the then 15 year old to learn the craft of goldsmithing. By the end of his apprenticeship at the age of 21 he won, as the best European, the silver medal at the Skill Olympics in Birmingham.
